Perth Glory have signed two-time golden boot winner Shane Smeltz for the next three A-League seasons, while former England international Robbie Fowler has given his word he will play on with the club.

Smeltz, who played with Gold Coast last season and also scored a goal for New Zealand in last year's World Cup, joins Travis Dodd, Dean Heffernan, Danny Vukovic and Evan Berger as new signings at the Glory.

Smeltz will become Perth's international marquee player, while Fowler, who held that title last season, will be classed as a normal player under the salary cap.

Fowler has a handshake agreement with owner Tony Sage to play on next year, with the club hopeful the deal will be set in stone in the coming weeks.

Despite Perth's horrendous campaign last season, which saw the club finish above only now-defunct North Queensland, Smeltz was confident something special was brewing at the Glory.

"It's all about timing and I think Perth Glory is heading in the right direction," Smeltz said.

"There's a fresh look about the club and it's something I want to be part of.

"I don't think one player is going to change everything but I think I can certainly help out."

Smeltz, who has scored 49 A-League goals in stints with Wellington Phoenix and Gold Coast, is set to become only the second player to reach 50 goals in the competition.

"He's a fantastic signing for the club," Glory coach Ian Ferguson said.

"Shane was my first priority, my first target because I knew we had to get a proven goal scorer and that's what we have done.

"Shane is the type of forward we missed last season, one who can hold up the ball and bring other players in the game."
