Everton have appealed against Tim Cahill's sending off in Sunday's 3-1 home win over Newcastle United in the English Premier League.
The veteran Australian was shown a straight red card for grabbing Newcastle's Yohan Cabaye by the throat just seconds after the full-time whistle.
If the appeal is unsuccessful, Cahill could miss the opening three matches of next season.
The Frenchman apologised for baiting the Socceroo.
"I would like to apologise for the cross words I exchanged with Tim Cahill which resulted in his red card and my booking on the final whistle," he said on his club's website.
"It was unnecessary and, regrettably, the result of frustration and disappointment, all in the heat of the moment.
"It is out of character and for that I am sorry."
