The French Football Federation says it will back incumbent Sepp Blatter in the upcoming FIFA presidential election as he goes up against Asian football supremo Mohamed Bin Hammam.

Whereas England's FA revealed on Thursday it would abstain, smarting from a crushing defeat in December last year in the battle to stage the 2018 World Cup, the French said they would go with Blatter in the June 1 poll.

"The Federal Council (of the FFF) has decided that the Federation would support the candidature or Monsieur Blatter," FFF chairman Fernand Duchaussoy said on Friday.

Blatter, 75, will be out to land a fourth and last mandate at the head of world football's governing body. Bin Hammam is his only declared rival.

The winner needs a simple majority of votes cast by the body's 208 members.
