Matildas Central: Kerr scores, Raso assist

Sam Kerr scored early before spurning several chances in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) while Hayley Raso won a penalty.

Kerr netted her12th goal of the 2019 NWSL season as Chicago Red Stars won 2-0 over Utah Royals. 

Kerr, who put in a full shift, opened the scoring in the fifth minute at the second attempt from close range after her initial header was saved. 

She shot wide on a fast break in the 32nd minute when a pass may have been a better option. 

Two minutes later she shot over the bar after a smart turn on the edge of the box. 

Kerr produced a brilliant burst, combining with Vanessa DiBernardo who released her before her curling shot was well saved in the 64th minute. 

She shot wide two minutes later while she had another effort saved in the 82nd minute. 

Kerr released Savannah McCaskill in the 85th minute wide in the box and her parried shot fell for Brooke Elby to make it 2-0. 

Mackenzie Arnold was an unused sub for the Red Stars. 

Hayley Raso won a penalty for Portland Thorns as they drew 1-1 with Sky Blue. 

Raso, who played a full game in an attacking wide role, was tackled late after a cut back inside the box in the 39th minute, leading to Christine Sinclair’s spotkick goal. 

Caitlin Foord, who started and played 65 minutes, fizzed a long range shot wide in the 58th minute. 

Steph Catley put in a full shift for Reign FC as they won 1-0 over Houston Dash. 

Kyah Simon started and played 56 minutes for Houston but had no chances on goal.

Chloe Logarzo started but was replaced after 35 minutes as North Carolina Courage defeated Washington Spirit 1-0. 

Elise Kellond-Knight played a full game for Spirit, while Amy Harrison was an unused sub.
