Caitlin Foord produced a stunning volley but missed a penalty while Samantha Kerr netted a brace in the National Women’s Soccer League and Tameka Butt also scored two in Norway.

Samantha Kerr netted a double as Chicago Red Stars defeated North Carolina Courage on Sunday.

Kerr opened the scoring in the 13th minute when released by Yuki Nagasato, with the Matilda’s under-hit shot creeping underneath the opposition keeper.

The Matildas captain made a goal-line clearance shortly prior to half-time before her layoff set up Michele Vasconcelos for a shot which hit the post.

Kerr again set up Vasconcelos only for her 90th minute effort to hit the woodwork, before grabbing her second late on.

The Australian skilfully beat her opponent on the edge of the box before firing in a powerful strike to make it 3-1 in stoppage time.

Ellie Carpenter set up Caitlin Foord’s goal in Portland Thorns’ 3-1 win away to Orlando Pride, although Foord did miss a spotkick.

With Portland leading 2-1, Carpenter broke down the right side of the box with her cross taking a deflection before reaching Foord who volleyed home emphatically.

The Thorns won a 66th minute penalty but Foord’s effort was at a good height to goalkeeper Haley Kopmeyer’s right to save.

Foord played 88 minutes for Portland while Carpenter put in a full shift and Hayley Raso continued her return from injury as a 46th minute substitute.

Emily van Egmond put in a full shift for Orlando, while Alanna Kennedy was absent due to a left quad injury.

Clare Polkinghorne played a full game but Kyah Simon was an unused sub as Houston Dash moved into top spot with a 2-1 away win over Utah Royals.

Chloe Logarzo continues to prove her fitness, getting through 66 minutes as Washington Spirit won 3-2 at Sky Blue.

Logarzo was involved on the left flank in the lead-up to her side’s second goal.

Amy Harrison started and played 84 minutes for the Spirit too.

In the Norwegian Toppserien, Tameka Butt netted a double as second-placed Klepp thrashed Valerenga 5-0.

Butt started and scored her side’s second goal in the seventh minute.

She also rounded out the scoring in the 81st minute before being replaced with five minutes to play.
