A group of around 50 Sampdoria fans hurled insults at players during training on Wednesday, protesting against the club's relegation from Serie A.

Coach Alberto Cavasin, goalkeeper Gianluca Curci and striker Massimo Maccarone came in for the harshest criticism, according to Italian news agency Ansa.

Only club captain and Italy midfielder Angelo Palombo escaped the wrath, with fans warmly applauding him and calling on him to stay with the club in Serie B and "slap" all his team-mates.
