Socceroos Central: Boyle double, Taggart miss

Martin Boyle scored a double in a Player of the Match display to start the new 2020-21 Scottish Premiership season as Hibernian beat Kilmarnock 2-1 on Saturday.

Boyle opened the scoring in the fifth minute when he rounding onrushing Kilmarnock keeper Jake Eastwood and fired in at the near post past a defender on the last line.

The Socceroo made it 2-0 in the 34th minute when he waltzed into the box and lashed a diagonal shot across Eastwood.

Boyle was named the BBC Player of the Match and earned praise from Hibs boss Jack Ross.

"Martin Boyle is a huge asset for me and the way we play, particularly with the threat we have on the counterattack,” Ross said.

“He understands fully how important he is to me and he showed that again today."

Lyndon Dykes played a full game in attack but was quiet as Livingston lost 1-0 to St Mirren on Saturday.

On Sunday, Tom Rogic was an unused substitute as Celtic started the new season with a 5-1 win over Hamilton Academical.

Adam Taggart missed a golden opportunity in the second half as Suwon Bluewings lost 1-0 at home to 10-man Daegu FC in the Korean K League on Saturday.

Taggart, who played a full game, made an excellent run at the near post in the 53rd minute to meet a cross, but could only divert his header past the post with the keeper beaten.

Terry Antonis was an unused sub.

Elsewhere, Brandon O’Neill put in a full shift as Pohang Steelers lost 2-1 at Jeonbuk Motors on Saturday.

Rashid Mahazi was back in the Incheon United squad but remained an unused sub as they lost 3-1 to Gwangju.

Connor Chapman started and played 75 minutes as Daejeon Hana Citizen won 2-1 at Chungnam Asan in the K2 League.

Fran Karacic put in a full shift as NK Lokomotiva lost the Croatian Cup final 1-0 to NK Rijeka on Saturday.

Milos Degenek was an unused sub as Crvena Zvezda started the new Serbian Superliga season with a 3-0 win over Novi Pazar.

Thomas Deng returned to play a full game in defence as Urawa Reds drew 1-1 wih Peter Cklamovski’s Shimizu S-Pulse in the Japanese J.League on Saturday.

Mitch Langerak played a full game as Nagoya Grampus went down 1-0 at home to Kashiwa Reysol on Saturday.
