Socceroos Central: Leckie & Maclaren impress in pre-season

Mathew Leckie, Jamie Maclaren and Awer Mabil all scored goals in pre-season friendlies, while Tom Rogic hit the scoresheet in the UEFA Champions League qualifiers.

Mathew Leckie played 90 minutes across two games and scored his first goal for new club Hertha Berlin as he bids to make a good impression.

Leckie played the second 45 of Hertha’s 3-0 win over Erfurt on Saturday, before netting in the first half of Sunday’s 2-0 win over Carl Zeiss Jena.

The Socceroo opened the scoring on 31 minutes after some good lead-up work from Julius Kade and Maurice Covic.

Awer Mabil was another newcomer to impress, scoring a nice free-kick for Pacos Ferreira in a 1-1 friendly draw against Nick Ansell’s Tondela in Portugal.

Jamie Maclaren scored a double as SV Darmstadt defeated SV Wallern 4-3 in pre-season. Maclaren played an hour.

Jackson Irvine scored for Burton Albion in a 5-0 pre-season win over Kingsgrove Athletic, while Jordan Lyden earned a penalty for Aston Villa in a 2-1 loss to Shrewsbury.

Adam Federici was back in action after a long-term knee injury, playing the second half of Bournemouth’s 2-1 win over Estoril.

Tom Rogic got on the scoresheet as Celtic brushed aside Northern Ireland champions Linfield 2-0 in their UEFA Champions League qualifier on Friday.

Rogic netted Celtic’s second goal on 22 minutes with a clever finish from a corner.

Mustafa Amini claimed an assist as AGF kicked off the new Danish Superliga season with a 2-1 home loss to Horsens on Friday night. Amini played a full game.

Jimmy Jeggo put in a full shift as Sturm Graz won 3-0 away to Hard in the early rounds of the Austrian Cup, while James Holland was absent for new club LASK Linz.

Alex Gersbach got a reprieve and played the full 90 minutes at left-back as Rosenborg won 3-0 away to Sogndal in the Norwegian Tippeligaen on Saturday.

In Korea, Matt Jurman, Connor Chapman and Aleksandar Jovanovic all put in full shifts for their clubs, while Tomislav Mrcela was a 61st minute substitute having scored in midweek.

In China, Ryan McGowan played a full game for Guizhou Zhicheng while both Apostolos Giannou and Trent Sainsbury were absent for their clubs.
