Socceroos Central: Rogic returns, Garuccio's debut assist

Tom Rogic returned to action for Celtic following the 2018 World Cup, Ben Garuccio made his debut for new club Hearts and provided an assist, while a handful of other Aussies commenced club action for the new season.

Rogic and Alex Gersbach faced off in the UEFA Champions League second qualifying round on Thursday morning as Celtic knocked off Rosenborg 3-1 in Glasgow.

Rogic was a 76th minute substitute for the Bhoys, while Gersbach came in the 72nd minute.

Gersbach had been overlooked for the final World Cup squad and was making his first appearance for the Norwegian champions since a loan spell with Lens in France.

Milos Degenek’s Red Star Belgrade also featured in the UEFA Champinos League second qualifying round in midweek, winning 3-0 over Suduva.

Degenek put in a full shift while Australian goalkeeper Evan Ridley was an unused sub for Suduva.

Awer Mabil was absent again as FC Midtjylland lost 2-1 away to Astana in UEFA Champions League qualifying too.

Ex-Adelaide United left-back Ben Garuccio debuted for new club Hearts in the Scottish League Cup in midweek as they won 5-0 over Cowdenbeath.

Garuccio made an impact after a goalless first half, providing the assist for the opening goal.

New signings Oliver Bozanic and Ryan Edwards were both absent, although the former had debuted on the weekend as Hearts won on penalties after a 1-1 draw with Raith Rovers.

Elsewhere, Australian pair Andy Rose and Lyndon Dykes faced off and put in full shifts as Motherwell won over Queen of the South 2-0.

Dykes had opened the scoring on Saturday as Queen of the South won 4-0 at Edinburgh City. Rose had been a third minute substitute as Motherwell lost on penalties to Stranraer on Saturday.

Australian midfielder Jesse Curran put in a full shift as Dundee won 2-0 at Peterhead. Curran had been a 37th minute sub as Dundee lost 1-0 at home to Dunfermline on Sunday.

In the Japanese J.League on the weekend, Mitchell Langerak kept a clean sheet as Nagoya Grampus drew 0-0 with Besart Berisha’s Sanfrecce Hiroshima. Berisha was an unused sub.

Elsewhere, Shimizu S-Pulse’s Mitch Duke and Urawa Reds’ Andrew Nabbout were both absent for their clubs.

In the Korean K-League on the weekend, James Donachie played his first full 90 minutes for new club Chunnam Dragons as they lost 3-1 at Connor Chapman’s Pohang Steelers. Chapman put in a full shift.

Dylan McGowan was an unused sub for Gangwon, while Kwabena Appiah was absent for Incheon United.

In the Danish Superliga on Sunday, Mustafa Amini made his first appearanceof the season as a 68th minute substitute as AGF drew 1-1 with Nordsjaelland with his late shot hitting the post leading to the equaliser.

Brent McGrath was an unused sub as Esbjerg lost 3-2 at home to Vendsyssel. Mabil was absent as Midjtylland lost 2-1 at AaB.

In the Austrian Cup on Sunday, Jimmy Jeggo was absent as Austria Vienna won 4-0 at Austria XIII. 

James Holland put in a full shift as LASK Linz won 3-0 at Hertha on Friday.

In the Swiss Super League on Saturday, Tomi Juric was absent on opening day as Luzern lost 2-0 at home to Neuchatel Xamax.

In the Serbian Superliga on Friday, Degenek put in a full shift on the opening day as Red Star won 3-0 over Dinamo Vranje.

In the Czech Liga over the weekend, Golgol Mebrahtu and Aleksandar Susnjar were both absent as Mlada Boleslav lost 3-2 at Zlin.
