Mat Ryan produced a strong display in the English Premier League, while Mile Jedinak’s Aston Villa took a big stride towards promotion against Bailey Wright’s Bristol City.

Firstly in Scotland's Championship, forgotten former Socceroo Scott McDonald scored a double as Dundee United defeated Brechin City 4-1 on Tuesday.

The result helped United consolidate second spot on the table, with a view to promotion, sitting three points behind leaders St Mirren.

McDonald, who scored in the first and 49th minutes, now is the equal second top scorer in the Championship with nine strikes.

In the Cypriot First Division on Wednesday, Tommy Oar played a full game as APOEL won 5-2 over Aris.

The result keeps APOEL in the title hunt, sitting third, only four points behind leaders AEK Larnaca with two games in hand.

In the Portuguese Primeira Liga on Wednesday, Awer Mabil put in a full shift as Pacos Ferreira lost 4-2 away to Rio Ave.

Meanwhile, Mabil's teammate Dylan McGowan has moved to Korean club Gangwon FC on loan.

In the English Premier League on Monday, Mat Ryan made several good saves to help Brighton & Hove Albion claim a 2-2 draw with south coast neighbours Bournemouth.

Brad Smith and Adam Federici were both absent for the Cherries due to injury.

Ryan made good saves from Marc Pugh and Jordan Ibe during the game, with the Daily Star rating the Aussie as one of his side’s best players, with a 7.5/10 display.

Aaron Mooy played a full game as Huddersfield suffered a 3-0 defeat away to Leicester City in the Premier League.

The Huddersfield Examiner rated Mooy’s performance as a 6/10, with the busy Christmas potentially catching up with him.

“Had a good first half, but looked fatigued in the second period,” the Huddersfield Examiner wrote.

Elsewhere in England’s Championship, Mile Jedinak put in a full shift against Bailey Wright as Aston Villa boosted their promotion hopes with an impressive 5-0 win over Bristol City.

Wright put in a full shift for the Robins who slip to fourth after their second straight defeat, while Jedinak’s Villa move up to fifth.

Tom Beadling was an unused sub as Sunderland lost 1-0 at home to Barnsley, while Jackson Irvine played a full game as Hull City lost 1-0 at Bolton.

James Meredith played the full 90 as Millwall lost 2-1 at Norwich, while Massimo Luongo also played a full game as QPR won 2-1 over Cardiff.

In League One, Cameron Burgess (full game), Bradden Inman (64th minute sub) and Ryan Williams (started, subbed off on 58 minutes) all got minutes, while Callum Elder and Aiden O’Neill were both absent.

O'Neill has now returned to parent club Burnley, while Terry Antonis has left Dutch club VVV Venlo to move to Melbourne Victory.

Bruce Djite has left Suwon FC to sign with Indonesian outfit PSM Makassar, Nathan Burns departed Sanfrecce Hiroshima for Wellington Phoenix, while Dino Djulbic has left Malaysia to sign with Victory.

Finally in the Japanese Emperor’s Cup final on Monday, Milos Degenek was absent as Yokohama F. Marinos suffered a 2-1 extra-time loss to Cerezo Osaka.
