Socceroos Central: Wright returns, Rukavytsya scores again

Forgotten Socceroo Bailey Wright made his first competitive start in more than nine months while Nikita Rukavytsya continued his rich run of goals lately in club action on Saturday.

Firstly in the English FA Cup on Saturday, Bailey Wright started and played the full 90 minutes as Championship club Bristol City knocked out Aaron Mooy’s Huddersfield 1-0.

Wright returned to competitive action as a 38th minute substitute for City on New Year’s Day following a long-term thigh injury.

Saturday’s start was his first since April 2 and he made a key contribution by clearing Steve Mounie’s lob off the line after the shot had beaten the keeper.

Australian goalkeeper Adam Federici made his first appearance in three months for Stoke City in their 1-1 draw away to Shrewsbury in the FA Cup.

Callum Elder debuted for Ipswich Town following his loan move from Leicester City, putting in a full shift in their 1-0 loss at Accrington Stanley.

In the FA Cup on Sunday, Ryan Williams started and played 90 minutes as Rotherham United went down 7-0 to Manchester City.

On-loan Jordan Lyden had more luck with fourth tier Oldham Athletic stunning Fulham 2-1. Lyden played a full game and got a late booking. 

In the Israeli Premier League on Saturday, Nikita Rukavytsya kept up his scoring form with the decisive goal in Maccabi Haifa’s 2-1 win at Maccabi Petah Tikva.

Rukavytsya scored in the 53rd minute, making it three goals in three games.
