Matildas Central: van Egmond winner, Gielnik hat-trick

Emily van Egmond headed in the winner for West Ham United in the English Women’s Super League, while Emily Gielnik netted a hat-trick in Sweden and Alexandra Huynh debuted in Italy. 

Emily van Egmond scored a late winner as West Ham edged past Birmingham 2-1 in the English Women’s Super League on Saturday.

The Matildas midfielder played a full game in midfield and delivering the decisive blow in the 73rd minute.

Van Egmond glided into the box and glanced home a diagonal cross from Rachel Daly for her second goal in Hammers colours.

Mackenzie Arnold also put in a full shift and made a few good saves for West Ham.

Hayley Raso came close with a second-half volley while Sam Kerr was relegated to a minor role off the bench as Chelsea defeated the previously unbeaten Everton 4-0 on Sunday.

Raso started and played 79 minutes but came close to levelling the match early in the match when she volleyed from Ingrid Wolf’s cross but her shot was blocked.

Kerr was a 79th minute substitute and one half chance on goal before the full-time whistle.

Caitlin Foord put in a full shift as Arsenal’s perfect start to the season ended with a 1-0 loss at Manchester United on Sunday.

Foord was relatively quiet but drew a top save from United keeper Mary Earps when she side-footed on a cross from an angle.

Lydia Williams was back on the bench for the Gunners, while Steph Catley remains out injured.

Chloe Logarzo played a full game as a depleted Bristol City lost 8-1 to Manchester City on Saturday.

Logarzo’s Australian teammate Ella Mastrantonio was absent due to self isolation after one of her housemates developed COVID-19 symptoms.

Bristol actually requested the match be postponed as Mastrantonio was one of five players absent due to isolation as they all live in a shared house.

Alanna Kennedy started and played 64 minutes in Alex Morgan’s debut for Tottenham as they drew 1-1 with Reading on Saturday.

Emily Gielnik netted a hat-trick as Vittsjo defeated KIF Orebro 4-0 in the Swedish Damallsvenskan on Sunday.

Gielnik, who put in a full shift, put her side ahead in the 21st minute with a looping volley, before getting down the right flank and laying off the pass for Ebba Hed to make it 2-0 in the 39th minute.

The Matildas forward added two further goals in the final 10 minutes to seal an emphatic win, firstly with a cool right-foot volley and then a stunning long-range strike.

Gielnik has now netted eight goals in the 2020 Damallsvenskan to sit equal fifth on the scoring charts.

Alexandra Huynh made her debut for Napoli, playing a full game in defence, as they lost 2-1 at home to AC Milan in the Italian Serie A Women on Sunday.

Jacynta Galabadaarachchi was a 79th minute sub for Napoli, while Isobel Dalton was absent.

Clare Polkinghorne put in a full shift as Avaldsnes enjoyed a good weekend, keeping alive their Norwegian Toppserien title hopes with one game to play, with a 3-0 win over Klepp on Saturday.

Katrina Gorry was an unused sub for third-placed Avaldsnes, who closed within one point of leaders Valerenga who lost, and second-placed Rosenborg after they drew.

Nikola Orgill started and played 70 minutes as Kolbotn drew 1-1 with Lillestrom, who had Karly Roestbakken remain an unused sub.

Aivi Luik was a 72nd minute substitute as Sevilla won 2-1 away to Deportivo La Coruna in the Spanish Primera Division Feminina on Sunday.

Alex Chidiac was an unused sub as Atletico Madrid drew 0-0 with Sporting de Huelva, while Jenna McCormick’s Real Betis had their match with Rayo Vallecano postponed.

Amy Harrison started and played an hour while Kyah Simon was absent as PSV Eindhoven got past ADO Den Haag 1-0 in the Dutch Eredivisie Women on Sunday.

Beattie Goad played a full game and got a yellow card as SV Meppen went down 3-0 to Bayern Munich in the German Frauen Bundesliga on Sunday.
