Socceroos Central: Mabil chance, Borrello debut

Socceroos Awer Mabil, Brandon Borrello, Alex Gersbach and Brad Smith were among the Aussies back in competitive action this weekend as European leagues continue to resume.

Awer Mabil was a 76th minute substitute as Danish champions FC Midtjylland won 1-0 away to AaB in the Danish Superliga on Saturday.

The Socceroo burst forward and could’ve made it 2-0 in stoppage time but his shot was blanketed by AaB goalkeeper Jacob Rinne.

Zach Duncan started and played 56 minutes as AGF drew 0-0 away to Nordsjaelland on Sunday. Alex Gersbach replaced him in the 56th minute.

Jackson Irvine wasn’t part of the St Pauli squad which won 3-0 over Holstein Kiel in the opening weekend of the German 2.Bundesliga season, following his off-season move from Hibernian.

Brandon Borrello debuted for Dynamo Dresden, starting and playing 58 minutes, in a 3-0 win over Ingolstadt on Saturday.

James Holland was also absent as LASK won 1-0 at Rheindorf Altach in the Austrian Bundesliga on Saturday.

In the Croatian Prva HNL, Deni Juric started and played 70 minutes as Sibenik lost 3-1 away to HNK Gorica who were without Anthony Kalik. Doni Grdic was an unused sub for Sibenik.

Dylan McGowan played a full game as Kilmarnock won 2-1 over Stranraer in the Scottish League Cup on Saturday, while Aussie goalkeeper Aaron Montrose put in a full shift as Montrose lost 4-1 to Ross County.

Lachlan Jackson started and played 79 minutes as Suwon won 5-2 at Ulsan Hyundai in the Korean K-League on Sunday.

Alex Grant started and played 89 minutes as Pohang Steelers went down 1-0 at home to Seoul on Saturday.

Harrison Delbridge played a full game as Incheon United won 2-1 at Suwon Bluewings on Friday.

Ryan Edwards put in a full shift as Busan I'Park lost 3-1 at Daejeon Hana Citizen in the K2-League on Saturday.

Adam Taggart was absent as Cerezo Osaka drew 3-3 with Sagan Tosu in the Japanese J.League on Saturday.

Brad Smith started and played 53 minutes as Seattle Sounders returned to winning ways with a 1-0 victory at Austin in the MLS on Friday.
